Guided Biofilm Therapy

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a modern and comprehensive approach to dental cleaning and hygiene that involves meticulously removing dental plaque and biofilm from the teeth and gums.

Biofilm is a thin layer of microorganisms, including bacteria, that adhere to the tooth surface and can cause various oral health issues, such as tooth decay and gum disease.

The GBT process typically includes the following steps:

  • 1. Assessment

The patient’s oral health is assessed, examining the presence and extent of biofilm, stains, and calculus (hardened plaque).

  • 2. Dental plaque disclosure

A special dye or disclosing agent is applied to the teeth, highlighting areas of plaque and biofilm for easy identification and targeted removal.

  • 3. Air polishing

An air-polishing device uses air, water, and fine powder to gently and effectively remove remaining stains, biofilm, and soft deposits, leaving teeth clean and smooth.

  • 4. Ultrasonic scaling

High-frequency vibrations and a water spray eliminate calculus and biofilm from the teeth, breaking down hardened deposits. This is done through precise linear oscillations to ensure the safety and comfort of the gums.

  • 5. Antimicrobial therapy (if needed)

An antimicrobial agent may be applied to teeth and gums to control bacterial growth and prevent further biofilm formation.

Guided Biofilm Therapy is a prominent aspect of our practice, showcasing our distinctive approachThis link leads to Our Difference page. GBT provides patients with heightened precision and comfort during their cleaning experience.

GBT does not involve standard ultrasonic scaling. It incorporates an air polisher as the initial step and a Piezon as the second step for those requiring it. The Piezon effectively breaks down tenacious deposits that the air polisher may not eliminate. We advocate fostering a balanced, healthy biofilm to substitute the disease-causing one, preventing cavities and gum disease.

Saliva testing detects disease-related bacteria through a collected sample, guiding tailored treatments like targeted antimicrobial therapy for effective management of the condition. It’s a non-invasive and convenient diagnostic approach.

Inspired by Nature

Patient Stories
‘‘I went in to Restoration about a week ago and it was the best dentist experience I've ever had! I have severe anxiety about the dentist and they walked me through everything, gave me the option of a weighted blanket, and played my favorite music (which is pretty obscure!)’’

- Enma G.

‘‘Dr. Clayton and his team are always so friendly, thorough, and kind. They have a lot of accommodations to make your visit comfortable and are very in-depth to make sure all aspects of your health are great. I love the family feel you get with the conversations.’’

- Peyton L.
